About LDA

Paul Ryken
"I have been a member of the Latin Dance Australia school for 2 years and have only been living in Australia for 6 months longer than that. During the day, I am a highly qualified Managed Services Transition Project Manager (AKA a pedantic nerd) for a multinational IT Services company so at night time, it is great to throw off the cape and dance with passion and without fear.
I initially joined LDA (as my local dance school) as I had previously participated in some ballroom dance classes in New Zealand, and really enjoyed the social and health aspects. It is a cliché, but LDA is now like a family to me. Most people know me by name if not by my face or the performances or classes I have been in. I continue to do repeat classes (being of the older Generation X, it sometimes takes me a little bit longer to remember the steps) and really enjoy having a good laugh in class. When I am at LDA, I am happy, cheeky, energetic, considerate, appreciative, strong, confident, thoughtful, youthful and ALIVE!
Wanting to understand the origins of the salsa, I holidayed in Cuba in May / June last year and would thoroughly recommend visiting the country to anyone. I have a bucket list in which I ticked off two items: to smoke a cigar in Havana and to dance with a Cuban girl in Cuba.
Strange as it may seem, I am also very shy at times, so if you see me sitting down at a dance club and would like to dance – please just ask. I will be gentle and will also accept your offer.

I firmly believe that dancing is all about the top 12 inches – your face. If I can make a girl smile during my dancing with her, then I have achieved the ultimate in the moments of intimate connection."

" A life changing decision: There is no-one that starts dancing at LDA and ends up being the same person. It is a life changing adventure.
For me it was so intense I can divide my life in “before LDA” and “after LDA”. Of course in my case all is different because I worked in the administration first and started attending the classes later.
At first I could work only, as I was studying and on a quest for a permanent visa. As soon as I slayed the dragon (meaning that I got the said visa) I had time and energy to do something I was fighting for: go back to dancing.
See, I danced other styles for most of my life, more than 20 years of classical ballet, some contemporary, modern, quite a lot of jazz were my former styles. I missed dancing to the point of waking up in the middle of the night crying because I dreamt I was performing.
To learn the Latin dance styles was literally “a dream come true”. What I didn’t expect was that it was going to be such an incredible experience.
The classes at LDA are amazing. It is like they say: you only realize how good something is when you experience the bad. Only by going to some workshops somewhere else where things didn’t work well I realized how flawlessly the classes at LDA are.
The syllabus, the rotation systems, the teachers’ training, the motivation of the teachers, all is so perfect that all you have to do is learn the steps, enjoy yourself, relax, have fun and when you least expect, there you are: in the dance floor, feeling the amazing thing that is dancing.
It is my utmost belief that everyone in the world from any culture, should experience dance in some form. Latin dancing is particularly exhilarating because of the interaction with the other people.
Performing at the LDA annual Ball was also ridiculously good. Performing is a great experience and I’ve made friends for life, I got back the feeling that only being on stage can give me and I got my body back the way I like.
I have always been fit but during a few years (during the “visa quest”) I couldn’t exercise at all, that meant my muscles were in bad shape and I was fourteen kilos over my regular weight. In one year dancing I was back into my old self, fitter than ever, fourteen kilos lighter, much stronger and more than happy.
I got addicted and learnt almost all the styles LDA teaches, falling in love with each. I still go out dancing every week and I bet I will do this for the rest of my life.
I have been dancing in Brazil and I have to say that our (Australia’s and LDA’s) level of Salsa and Bachata is generally higher than what I experienced in the cities of Campinas, Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza. I also think that our level of Zouk is pretty high; I was able to dance it well in all these places following a lot of different partners with high technical level.
I have also seen a lot of dance shows in my life including amazing spectacles in Las Vegas and I can say for sure that LDA’s Samba level is extremely good. I am a huge fan of Amy Mills and her work too. Her Zumba is a journey to the joy of dancing.
Concluding I would say that LDA was and is a path for bliss in my life. My personal slogan is: writing is my call, dancing is my bliss"
Tania Crivellenti was the School Manager and Marketing Manager at LDA from 2005 to 2008 and still attends the dance classes at LDA.She has two student’s awards for best dancer at choreographies at the LDA Ball and she is currently a writer - www.taniacreations.com

" How I arrived at LDA:  At first I could only Salsa as I learnt from a small salsa-only school run from a community centre, but after seeing how beautiful the dancers looked doing a Bachata and Zouk dance at dance venues - I was sold!  I wanted to learn those styles too so I joined LDA in August/September 2009 where I learn Salsa, Bachata and Zouk and I have never looked back since.

What really makes LDA different to others is the people and the environment.  I have learnt everything from the proper technique to execute a spin, to proper lead-and-follow techniques, musicality, rhythm and timing but above all - our instructors understand at LDA that most of us do not plan to quit our jobs to become professional dancers and that most of us are here for escaping the usual 9 till 5 routine.  But we also have so much fun learning.  This is why today I am completely addicted to dance and LDA.  Monday to Friday during office hours, I have to be a serious, stern and no-jokes lawyer.  At night, I can let the guard down. For me, coming to LDA at night has the ability to completely eradicate any bad days at work I may have had!  The walls of the LDA studio do very little to contain our laughter on a regular basis. Check out the pictures from our Crazy-Hat Bachata class day (I'm Batman!).  Best part of this is that each and every instructor I have had at LDA joins in with us!  Every instructor has a sense of humour, a passion for dance, they are incredible internationally recognised dancers and above all - the most experience combined together that you could possibly jam into a dance studio!
Two LDA moments will forever stick in my mind:
•   From not knowing anything about Bachata in October 2009 - to being invited to join the invitation only Advanced LDA Bachata Class in April 2010.  6 months baby!  Woohoo!
•   Outside the studio - Going to the Melbourne Latin Festival this year.  The festival was my first trip interstate just for dancing and I didnt tell all the LDA members that I was coming to Melbourne.  When they saw me - the pleasant surprise on their faces, the hugs and embraces on sight confirmed for me that at LDA we were more than just classmates at a dance studio - we were like a family.  And I have met so many wonderful people from all around Australia from that one Festival!  Next up is the Sydney Bachata Festival and then after the DouDouLe Latin Dance Camp!  I am looking forward to dancing with those new friends I have made and partying with the LDA crew!
Today....My life will never be the same again!  Its like that MasterCard ad on television - PRICELESS!
Recently I watched a movie called "Shall we Dance?" starring Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and Jeniffer Lopez.  It was a movie about a lawyer who was content with life... everything was fine for him but just wasnt happy...and on the way home from his office, he stepped into a dance school... the movie ends with him finding true happiness - sounds familiar dosnt it?!??!
I guarantee the reader who is thinking about joining us and is reading my story the following: if you come to LDA you will smile, you will laugh, you will feel a sense of achievement after completing any course at LDA, you will be dancing in the social scenes, you will act like your inner-child again, you will escape your 9 till 5, your social calender will never be the same again and you will witness me being an absolute clown in class (and occasionally being told to behave by our instructors!).  But most importantly - you will meet new friends and you will forge life-long bonds.
I will see YOU at the LDA dance studio soon I hope!"

" I came to LDA because I wanted to make friends and not have to go out social-dancing on my own, i planned to stay for 8 weeks, that was the whole idea !! and look where I ended up ...!! I am about to perform for the first time in my life, and if that wasn't nerve racking enough, doing acrobacies..
Who would have thought ?? don't worry, I am trying to beat my nervousness with positive energy .. and the
spray that Mel recommended in class, haha..
After deciding to bring my dancing to the next Level I changed my Return flight and decided to stay in Australia
as long as my visa allows me. because of LDA!"

Lesley Badelles
"My daughter (CJ, 16yrs old) and I got so caught up in the excitement of the LDA ball this year that we postponed our family holiday to start after the ball just so we can be a part of it.

I joined the Samba Axe choreo and CJ was joined the Hip Hop Choreo. She unfortunately fell out of love with her choreo.... luckily, Debralee agreed to allow her to join our Samba Axe choreo. Woo-hoooooo! My baby (not so much a baby anymore, though) is dancing in the Samba Axe choreo with me!  :-)
I also later joined the Beginner's Zouk choreo because they needed another female.... so I am now also learning Zouk and performing in the Beginner's Zouk choreo!!
My 6 yr old twins have been coming to most of the practice sessions and are feeling all the hype of the ball. It got to the point where they were asking every week if the ball was on this Saturday! Finally, I can say, "Yes, the ball is this Saturday"!!! LOL
We're all looking forward to the ball and performing what we have learnt.  :-)
And, Yes, I'm nervous as hell!

Looking forward to seeing all the performances on Friday night!! Cheers."

I just wanted to pass something on to you with the hope you will pass it on to your relevant team.

Today, when I said I LOVED the Cha Cha team ... I WAS NOT KIDDING!!! Last night (saturday), at our shared rehearsal, I was still having real trouble trusting MYSELF to do the 'show move' (between the legs thingy). Most of the Cha Cha team stepped in (and our salsa guys too - but many in Cha Cha are more experienced dancers). Not only to help me understand how the move was done but just supporting me to actually do the move with no judgement. They insisted Dave and I try the move over and over again and even cheered when we pulled it off!! It was so sweet and HEARTFELT!!

Words are really hard to find to express just how I felt last night and how deeply thankful I am. Supported..... LOVED.... and it gave me confidence!!... So many amazingly beautiful people ...

I already understood why I loved coming to LDA but now .... WOW !! You know that saying that goes: 'You can choose your friends but you cant choose your family' Well this is a family I choose. So many great people who I am proud to call friends - but what a great environment to learn not only the dancing but so much about yourself!! And even when it doesnt go right straight away having people to give you the strength to help you through it.....

Can you please pass on my deepest thanks. I am now so excited about next Sunday and learning even more about myself AND of course doing my DANCING !!! I LOVE IT !!!

Melanie Lambert
